Los Angeles Flagship, Ulla Johnson

Sunlight spills across a free-standing building in West Hollywood, Los Angeles, the façade surrounded by delicately curated gardens modeled after Japanese architecture. A quiet side entrance–inspired by traditional Parisian ateliers–transports you to an ethereal sanctuary replete with exquisitely hand-hewn furniture, lush materials, and native plants. The new Ulla Johnson Los Angeles flagship invites you to a world of discovery inspired by the dynamic city, where contemporary furniture and art from artisans based in California and beyond live amongst the designer’s exquisite ready-to-wear and accessories.

An abundance of natural wonders greets you upon entering the welcoming two-story flagship—the spectacular result of a partnership between Johnson and renowned Los Angeles interior designer Kelly Wearstler. A 16-foot Brachychiton tree planted on the first level rises to the ceiling through a mezzanine. European White Oak parquet flooring with Rosa Corallo stone inlay and raffia fringe walls grace the interior, while accessories, ceramics, and one-of-a kind objects trouvés wait to be found inside a “jewel box” room encased entirely in burl wood.

A melding of contemporary and vintage works adorn the intimate space, a visual dialogue Wearstler created alongside modern works from artists treasured by both Johnson and the interior designer.  The first-floor lounge features a coffee table custom-made by California artisan Vincent Pocsik. In the burl wood room, a set of colorfully joined jigsaw tables by Canadian artist Jeff Martin hints at themes of modernity and the natural world. A vintage high-backed carved wood hall chair by Urano Palma brings delightful intrigue–a purchase that ultimately inspired a fiberglass, bamboo, and Douglas fir light fixture by contemporary designer Minjae Kim.

Celebrating the beauty of craft and the natural world, this new retail experience is both a natural extension of Johnson’s signature as a creator—from her fashion collections to her NoHo and Amagansett stores—as well as being uniquely conceived for Los Angeles. The full Ulla Johnson collection will be available to shop, including ready-to-wear, bags, shoes, jewelry, swimwear, and denim—the latter being handmade in Los Angeles—with seasonal and limited-edition pieces designed exclusively for the store.
